Zale same-store sales edge up in 1Q

Same-store sales increased 0.4 percent at Zale Corp. for the first quarter ended Oct. 31.

The company attributed the slightly lower than expected same-store sales increase to clearance at the Zales brand, which saw more transactions but lower tickets.

"Our performance was consistent with our plan to move through as much non-program merchandise as possible in the first quarter to make way for fresh assortments and the selling of regular-priced goods in the all-important holiday season," President and Chief Executive Officer Betsey Burton said in a statement.

Total revenues for the first quarter reached $432 million, a 0.9 percent increase from the same period in 2005. Total revenues for 2005, however, included sales at the Bailey Banks and Biddle stores, which were closed in the second quarter of the year. Excluding sales from these stores, first-quarter revenues increased 3.1 percent.

Zale owns 2,345 stores throughout the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico under the names Zales Jewelers, Zales Outlet, Gordon's Jewelers, Bailey Banks and Biddle, Peoples Jewelers, Mappin's Jewelers and Piercing Pagoda. The company also operates Zales.com and Baileybanksandbiddle.com.
